RIA June Meetup on Cappuccino/Javascript

in

The Carrboro Rich Internet Applications Meetup Group - June Meetup

Date: Thursday June 18 7pm - 9pm
Where: Carrboro Creative Coworking, 205 Lloyd Street, Suite 101, Carrboro, NC 27510

Topic: Exploring Cappuccino
Speakers: Blake Watters & Jeremy Ellison of Objective 3

Cappuccino is an open source application framework for developing applications that look and feel like the desktop software users are familiar with.

Cappuccino is built on top of standard web technologies like JavaScript, and it implements most of the familiar APIs from GNUstep and Apple's Cocoa frameworks. When you program in Cappuccino, you don't need to concern yourself with the complexities of traditional web technologies like HTML, CSS, or even the DOM. The unpleasantries of building complex cross browser applications are abstracted away for you.

Join the Carrboro Rich Internet Applications Meetup as we take a tour of Cappuccino and examine exactly what this new framework has to offer. Experience with GNUStep/Cocoa is not required -- we'll walk through the fundamentals as we get started.

Window Offices Available

June first TWO window offices will be available at Carrboro Creative Coworking. Both come with basic furnishings like chairs and desks. We have WiFi, coffee, a technical book library, and a community of brilliant people.

Recently several new office coworkers moved in. One is a real estate software company and another is a senior editor for a big technical magazine. Plus there are a ton of software developers making cool stuff like iPhone applications.

Please contact me if you have any questions. I'd really appreciate it if you'd share this info with friends. :)

Entrepreneur Startup Meetup

On Wednesday May 27 at 6:30pm join other entrepreneurs working on startups here at CCC. There is no ridged schedule or speaker planned. We'll just talk about startup culture here in the Triangle and exchange ideas. Coffee, water, and soda will be provided. Folks plan on bringing snacks. Feel free to do the same. If you like other kinds of beverages its BYOB. I'm sure lots of people will share.

If you're interested in attending leave a comment at the NC Startup Blog. This event is cosponsored by SpringStage and the North Carolina Startup Blog. Big thanks to Marc Dewalle for suggesting and organizing this event.

Twelve Steps for Mighty Business

Small business really should be called Mighty Business. That's what Greg Hyer (twitter.com/LinkingRaleigh) and Helen Yoest (twitter.com/GWConfidence) think. They just wrote out some steps for mighty business using Twitter. Check out Greg's blog post 12 Step Programs for Small Business Can Develop on Twitter! for the story. (I just reformatted it here for you're reading enjoyment.)

12 step program for Mighty Business

  1. Project the Power of One! Don't worry about pretending to be big, you are big!
  2. Realize that your customers will play "follow the leader" if you can get them to want to follow.
  3. Always say "We" even if you are a company of one.
  4. Believe of Spiritual Capitalism. Integrity & commitment are as important as profit & efficiency. http://bit.ly/QiwX4
  5. Don't promise something you can't deliver.
  6. If you do not enjoy what you do, re-evaluate your business and get back to basics. Try to find the love!
  7. charge a fee that the market bares, not proportional to size of your biz
  8. Never be too proud to ask for help if you feel you need it.
  9. Align yourself with others to complement what you do. Be ready to recommend someone when a client asks.
  10. Family comes first. You need to support them as much as you need their support.
  11. Brand yourself. Coke can do it, so can you.
  12. Become your customer's biggest asset. You should improve their business or life & in return it will improve yours.
